Photo of the Week!

And another...

Wolcott, Vermont

The stalk on this old drummer taught Chase that patience and the ability to sneak quietly through the woods can be rewarding. We stalked this old bird opver the course of  20 minutes, sneaking and waiting for the drum. Sneaking and waiting. Finally the bird was spotted on a log less than 20 feet away.  This is only the second tikme in my life that I have been able to catch an old drummer like this. If yiou notice, the partial tail is evidence of a previous close encounter with someone not quite as quick as he.

This is Chase's thrid partridge.

just another bird...

Island Pond, Vermont

This is Chase's second partridge and his first of 2008. After persisting all day Saturday without even a glimpse of a bird, luck struck and a bird was sighted on Sunday afternoon. After missiing the first bird, the second stalk and shot connected and another beautiful NEK bird turned into a prize for an eleven year old. I see something special in the stalk and aim of this young man, my son, and I foresee many a bird wishing it had not decided to step into the path of this determined new hunter.

Congratulations Chase!

Chase's First Gobbler

Morgan, Vermont

Thanks to friend and co-worker, Doug Hasleton, of Morgan, Vermont Chase set his sights on his first gobbler. It was the first day of the Vermont youth turkey season and at 6:30 AM Chase set his sights and connected on a 16 lb 10 ounce jake. The wild turkey sported a 5 1/2 inch beard and 1/8 inch spurs. This was Chase's first big game harvest and needless to say he was as excited as his two guides! Look for Chase in the Vermont Outdoorsman periodical and the NTWF website photo gallery!

Tribute to a Friend

Irving Eaton

Our Uncle and dear friend Irving Eaton recently lost his couragous battle with cancer. Seen in this photo, Irving enjoyed all aspects of the outdoors. For those of us with him on this rainy day in the fall of 2006, we all knew that the day had been choreographed with some help from above. The hunt was one of Irving's most memorable days and will last forever in our memories. We all lost a dear friend and hunting buddy and we will all miss him dearly. The moose weighed in excess of 800 pounds and sported 17 points. We will all remember him by his child like grin at times like this.

Rest in Peace dear friend.

Fairfield Swamp Ospreys

Fairfield WMA Bakerfield, VT

The Vermont osprey population now exceeds 100 nesting pairs, thanks to the efforts of many. VT utilities have constructed many nesting platforms like the one pictured above to help the osprey with its nesting needs and to protect the birds from power lines. This platform was recently install by my c o-workers at the Vermont Electric Cooperative. Two weeks following the installation fo the platform the ospreys had returned and could be seen building their new home.

I have been involved in the installtion of fifteen of these platforms and take great pleasure in watching the birds nest, fish and rear their young all from the platform we provided.

Welcome to the Silvio O. Conte Refuge

Boreal Forest
Lewis Pond Boat Access, Silvio O. Conte Refuge

The forests contained within the Silvio O. Conte refuge exhibit elements of a Boreal Forest, more common in the northern sections of North America. Due to cold temperature inversions within the Nulhegan Basin, the forests look and feel much like those found in Quebec, Newfoundland and Ontario.  This past weekend, November 4th, the first snow had reached the North East Kingdom, giving  the forests a dusting of fresh white.

Ice Crystals

An overflowing spring splashes water on surrounding plants on the cool fall morning, freezing the delicate plants in a hard coating of ice.

Bird
Lewis Pond Road, Silvio O. Conte Refuge

In the NEK, the Ruffed Grouse is referred to as a "BIRD". This trip featured cameras instead of guns, and this tasty table fare was granted immunity on this bright fall Sunday.

Check back weekly for Linda's seasonal photo(s) of the week !

Birch Knoll Productions is your source for stunning seasonal photography from Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

PHOTOS AND PRINTS...

We will be making more of Linda's favorite photography available. Look for fully framed and matted Vermont photographs coming soon, for sale at reasonable prices! Look for us at Rutland's popular "Art in the Park"!!

This photo was taken at the Wentworth Inn in Jackson, NH. What appears to be an antique wagon wheel from a hay rake or similar equipment, is actually the town's Snow Packer used in the mid-1800's. The "double lane" packer relied on the weight of oak planks creating the outside of the wheel and a team of 6 draft horses to drag the packer through the town roads to pack the large snowfalls on the roads, making travel by horse and sleigh easier. Rather than fight the snow, they compressed it making the surface firm enough for townsfolk to run sleighs and walk on.

I wonder if they complained of the taxes for these essential services then?!

VIDEO PRODUCTION...
I have been fortunate that the company I work for has many exhilarating opportunities to shoot video for the purpose of documenting significant events or for promoting my hard working co-workers. I have learned that video is one of the most powerful media available if you are willing to commit to the endless hours of production time. For every hour of exciting field work, there is easily 10 hours of time spent behind the keyboard. Since a recent change in work responsibilities, time to pursue production opportunities has all but come to an end, partly the reason behind Birch Knoll Productions. The reward in the smiles of your audience is addicting and the need for me to pursue videography outside of work is strong.

             Work can be fun!

I owe my drive for video production to my co-worker Chris. He helped me realize the benefit of video in the workplace and as a result of this exposure, I quickly developed a passion for all aspects of video production. Our working relationship quickly developed into a peer to peer video production team. He shot, I edited and the result was that we created some fantastic work together. I learned from him a skill that allows me to affect people in ways that makes the endless editing hours worthwhile.

Look back often for stunning local videography shot by the Birch Knoll Productions Team, Linda and I!
HIGH DEFINITION VIDEO...
has captured the video enthusiast's attention! High Definition cameras have quickly become affordable for the occasional user and the large screen HD monitors make standard DV seem antiquated!

Birch Knoll Productions has recently purchased a Sony HDR-FX7 High Definition Camera.

Coming soon will be HD video of the local area and some of its popular activities. Birch Knoll Productions will soon be known for stunning New England videography, capturing the areas unique and serene qualities. Very soon, these will be available in Blue Ray DVD format for the High Definition enthusiast!

Fall in New England...
brings cool mornings, the leaves turn a brilliant orange and the smell of wood stove smoke begins to fill the Green Mountain air.

If you are like us, fall is a magical time of year and it just seems natural to be outdoors.

Everyone enjoys the outdoors in the fall in different ways. My family takes to Vermont's Green Mountains in pursuit of a memorable hunting experience. Everyone enjoys the outdoors in different ways, and I am hopeful that you will find my Capture Your Hunt page non-offensive and tastful.

Whether on film, video tape or in words, I will try and bring you along with us we enjoy another New England fall.

Capture Your Hunt...

Irving Eaton of Weathersfield, VT hit the mega-bucks for hunters in 2005 when he drew a Vermont Moose Permit for the E2 Zone. Hunting in the West Mountain Arera, Irvin took this moose in the first few minutes of the season.

We have still photos to cherish this special moment, but a video would tell the story end to end.

Check the Capture Your Hunt page often for new hunting stories, video and photos.

CONTACT ME TO DISCUSS FILMING YOUR SPECIAL HUNT.

Dreyden, Ontario

Ontario's Lakes Region... offers some of Canada's most assessible whitetail hunting opportunities. The Canadian Provence still allows non-guided hunters to self direct themselves to world class deer hunting. There are plenty of hunting lodges and self service lodging, most of which are close to the comforts of a town but minutes from exceptional hunting.

My first experience in Ontario was captured on video offering lasting memories of a hunt shared with my brother. Visit my Capture Your Hunt page for the full story, complete with video previews and photos of some of the deer taken at the Pine Sunset Lodge, located on the shore of Dinorwic Lake just minutes east of Dreyden, Ontario.

Green Mountain Snowshoes and the Nez Perce Indians...
Nothing much to do with photography or video, but my Great Grandfather was an early Vermont settler who, after spending time with Idaho's Nimi'ipuu Indian on the Nez Perce Reservation, set up his snowshoe shop on the banks of the White River in Gaysville, VT. He made thousands of pairs of snowshoes, which sold for less than $10. Some are still around, hidden away in estates and auction shops.

Visit my Green Mountain Snowshoe page for more information on Gaysville, VT, W.H. Ketchum's Green Mountain Snowshoes and the Nez Perce Indian Tribe.
